On this day, 21st of May 2006, Calcio Catania was “fighting” for going up to Serie A, playing against Catanzaro in the neutral ground of Lecce (Via del Mare stadium), for the penultimate match of Serie B.
While traveling to reach the final destination, there was a tragic car accident near Roseto Capo Spulico where two young men, Fabio Seminara and Carmelo Ligreci, lost their lives, because the car that led them to Lecce crashed into a tree.
The official news was spread late in Lecce, when the teams were already on the pitch for the warm-up, the stand held more or less ten thousand supporters of Calcio Catania was covered by a great amount of banners and flags that were immediately removed.
Catania won that match by scoring 3 goals with Giuseppe Mascara (two times) and Fabio Caserta, anyway it was a victory stained by a tragic event.
Today, it’s been fifteen years from that, but the memory of Fabio and Carmelo will never disappear.
